A standpipe is a rigid vertical water pipe installed in multi-story buildings, providing connection points for fire hoses to deliver water quickly and efficiently during a fire emergency. Functioning much like an internal fire hydrant, a standpipe significantly improves manual firefighting capability within buildings and bridges.

Standpipes eliminate the need for firefighters to drag heavy hoses up stairwells, saving valuable time while preventing hose slippage on inclined surfaces. Because standpipes are fixed in position, they help keep stairwells clear, improving safety for occupants evacuating the building.

Unlike fire hoses that can kink, loop, or suffer pressure loss due to friction, standpipes provide a direct, rigid water pathway. Their vertical installation reduces water pressure loss and ensures a more reliable water supply during critical moments.

Additionally, standpipe systems offer redundancy in situations where the building’s main water distribution system becomes compromised due to fire, structural damage, or explosions.
